Jazzmaster Pickups

Jazzmaster pickups are usually associated with the sounds of 50’s Californian surf music. However, they also produce an excellent range of tones for blues and rock n' roll. Legendary Jazzmaster players including Mickey Baker and Elvis Costello, to name a few are proof!

The Jazzmaster pickup is a true single-coil pickup. From start to finish, and works just like the famous single coils on the Stratocaster and Jazzmaster. The construction of Jazzmaster pickups does have some notable differences when compared to other more common single-coil pickups. They have a wider surface area which translates to a wider frequency response and, because the wire travels further with each turn, the pickup has a higher output.

This completely unique design is what gives Jazzmaster pickups that dark, warm but still very much a single coil tone. The larger surface area of coil 'senses' more of the string, resulting in that fatter, fuller sound.

A little Jazzmaster history:

The Jazzmaster has unique wide, white "soapbar" pickups that are unlike any other single coil. The JM coil is wound flat and wide, even more so than P-90's. This is in contrast to Fender's usual tall and thin coils. This "pancake winding" gives them a warmer thicker tone without losing their single coil clarity. Additionally, due to the pickups being reverse-wound, the pickups provide a 'hum cancelling' effect in the middle pickup position. This position eliminates the typical 60-cycle hum that is inherent in most single-coil pickups. The Jazzmaster has a mellower, “jazzier” tone than the Stratocaster, although it was not widely embraced by jazz musicians. Instead, it was adpoted by rock guitarists.
