An acoustic guitar should be kept in the 'goldilocks' zone of 45-55% relative humidity. Any lower or higher than this can result in serious damage to your instrument. If the humidity is lower than 40%, the lack of moisture can result in shrinking of the wood, causing cracks in the paint, issues with the bracing, and shrinking of your fretboard, resulting in sharp fret ends sticking out. If you go the other way, with humidity over 60%, you'll be hearing a tighter sounding guitar due to the soundboard expanding, causing it to resonate less. It can also make your action high, rendering the guitar nigh-on unplayable.
