This guide explains the correct order and method for applying a traditional 3-colour sunburst finish using nitrocellulose aerosols. The process builds colour in stages, starting from the wood surface and finishing with a protective clear coat.
Order of application
sanding sealer → tobacco brown → transparent red → black → clear gloss
sanding sealer → tobacco brown → transparent red → black → clear gloss

Step 1 – Surface preparation
- Sand the bare body smooth (typically P240–P320)
- Remove all dust and residue
- Ensure the surface is dry and grease-free
Any scratches or tool marks will show through a transparent sunburst, so the surface should be as even as possible before sealing.

Step 2 – Apply sanding sealer
Purpose: Seals the wood and provides a stable base for the colour coats.
- Apply light, even coats
- Allow each coat to flash off before the next
- Build coverage gradually rather than applying heavy coats

Step 3 – Flatten the sanding sealer
- Lightly flatten using 1000 grit wet & dry
- The aim is to smooth the surface, not remove the sealer
- Avoid sanding through to bare wood
If you do sand through, reapply sealer and allow it to dry before continuing.

Step 4 – Apply tobacco brown (centre colour)
- Spray evenly over the full face of the body
- Keep coats light and transparent
- Build colour gradually (do not aim for full opacity)
The wood grain should remain visible at this stage.

Step 5 – Apply transparent red (mid-band)
- Spray around the perimeter, working inward slightly
- Keep the spray angle shallow
- Build colour gradually and blend into the tobacco brown
- Avoid hard edges between colours

Step 6 – Apply black (outer edge)
- Spray only around the very outer edge and sides
- Use light, controlled passes
- Keep the black narrow and blend gently into the red
Black should frame the burst rather than dominate it.

Step 7 – Apply clear gloss
Purpose: Protects the colour coats and provides the final finish.
- Apply multiple light coats
- Allow flash-off between coats
- Build enough thickness for later sanding and polishing

Step 8 – Sand and polish
- Allow the clear coat to cure fully
- Level sand and polish if required
- Drying/curing varies with temperature, humidity, and coat thickness
Technical notes
- All products should be nitrocellulose-based and compatible
- Build colour gradually
- Avoid heavy coats, especially during colour stages
- Allow adequate drying time between coats
